In summary, the training techniques taught during the Bully-Proofing Youth assemblies focus on helping victimized students retain their personal power and dignity through simple action steps that alter body language and control reactions to bullying. The Anonymous Reporting System empowers students to specifically report physical bullying incidents and raise overall school awareness about bullying behaviors. The Anonymous Peer Rating Tool quantifies both bully and victim behavior and can be used to measure changes in individuals, groups, or the entire student population throughout the school year. The staff workshop increases awareness of the underlying causes of bully and victim behavior, prepares teachers to handle situations without making them worse, teaches methods of restructuring the classroom, and teaches staff how to effectively interact with parents.
The effectiveness of the Bully-Proofing Youth program has been measured by having all students fill out a pre and post-test rating how many times over a two week period they have seen each student in their class say or do something mean to another student. They also rate how many times they have witnessed each student in their class being targeted by other kids. In a recent pre-test survey conducted at Elmwood Elementary School in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, the total number of bullying incidents reported by 179 first through fifth grade students was 3230. Following the Bully-Proofing Youth program, this number dropped to 1861 incidents. The post-test given in May was identical to the pre-test given in February. This represents a total decrease in bullying behavior between February and May of 42.4 %. Victim behavior dropped from 2859 reported incidents in February to 1350 reported incidents in May. This represents a total decrease in victim incidents between February and May of 52.8 %. Teachers administered and totaled the surveys identically during both the February and May pre and post-tests. The results are even more significant due to the fact that bullying usually increases in the spring as the weather improves.
Student, teacher, and administrator reactions have been outstanding. The Bully-Proofing Youth program has been received with unbelievable enthusiasm everywhere it has been presented.
